UNIVERSITY EXPERIENCE IN BRAZIL
DESCRIPTION
Fruit market
DIRECTION
Natal, Rio Grande Do Norte, Brazil
AREA
1.200 m2
This project was carried out during my university exchange year in Brazil, specifically in the city of Natal, the capital of Rio Grande Do Norte.
The project aimed to help solve the food-supply issues of a disadvantaged area in the outskirts of Natal, as well as boosting the area’s appeal as a tourist attraction – thus providing the neighbourhood with a boost and creating economic benefits for the locals. The aim was to create a large market for locally-sourced products, to offer the local population the chance to make a living and be able to get by.
The project’s architecture is inspired by the nomadic constructions that dot the area, whose main purpose is to provide protection from the sun and high temperatures. With that in mind a large double-curved covering is created, one which repels the sun’s rays whichever way they are coming from, as well as creating a large and long market space which can be adapted according to demand. The materials used are wood from local sources, which respond well to the prevailing climatic conditions.
