PROTOTYPE ENERGY PROJECT

DESCRIPTION

Energy use of stormwater

DIRECTION

University Campus of the European University of Madrid

AREA

12.080 m2

This project was born out of the university’s need to meet a greater level of self-sufficiency in energy consumption.

With this in mind, an energy prototype was created that would be capable of generating electricity by taking advantage of rainwater and making the most of the campus’ uneven terrain to produce a waterfall with turbines. At the same time the water, after passing through the turbines, is rerouted into vacuum tubes over the cover of the prototype, which is above a cafeteria. Said cover is south-facing and thus receives high levels of solar radiation which shine onto the vacuum tubes, warming the collected rainwater – which is then redistributed around piping under the floor of the cafeteria, therefore creating an underfloor-heating system.
