FLAMENCO FACTORY
DESCRIPTION
Project of adaptation of old train ship
DIRECTION
Seville, Andalusia, Spain
AREA
2.500 m2
This project revolved around the restoration of an abandoned railway station, known as “La Estación de Cádiz”, in the centre of Seville.
The aim of the initiative was to create a ‘Flamenco Factory’ within the building’s interior. In order to do so, a series of dedicated spaces, specifically for the production of this centuries-old musical artform, were created. The goal behind using this artform was to try and strengthen the connection between the residents in the local neighbourhood while at the same time creating added value, which will boost the area as a whole. The spacial-colonisation system used was based around a system of rails from which were hung a series of acoustic curtains which, when unrolled, turn the area into different type of space – their dimensions depending on what each is used for.
Each space is devoted to a different part of the production chain of flamenco in all its forms, whether that be song, dance or percussion, with the curtain system able to be rolled up or unrolled to provide space for each element. When there is no flamenco music being produced in the main hangar area, the space becomes a large, open- public square, thus providing the neighbourhood with a new location for meeting up and recreational use.
